Ingredients

  • 2 cups Whole Milk (480ml) For best creamy texture
  • 1 tbsp Cocoa Powder Unsweetened
  • 1 tbsp White Sugar Adjust to taste
  • 1/2 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (85g) Or a chopped chocolate bar
  • 1 tsp Cornstarch The thickening agent
  • 1 pinch Sea Salt To enhance the chocolate flavor
  • 1 cup Whipped Cream (Optional) For topping

Equipment

  • 1 Small Saucepan
  • 1 Whisk Crucial for removing lumps
  • 2 Mugs

Method

  1. Make the Slurry: In a small bowl, mix the Cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold milk (taken from the 2 cups). Whisk until completely smooth to avoid lumps.
A small clear glass bowl containing a smooth white mixture of cornstarch and milk, with a metal wire whisk resting inside, sitting on a marble counter.
  2. Mix the Base: Pour the remaining milk into a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.

  3. Melt the Chocolate: Once the milk is warm (steaming, but not boiling), add the Chocolate Chips. Whisk constantly until fully melted and glossy.

  4. The Thickening Hack: Pour in your cornstarch slurry. Turn the heat down to low and whisk gently for 2-3 minutes.

  5. Watch the Magic: The mixture will suddenly thicken and coat the back of your spoon (like pudding).

  6. Serve: Remove from heat immediately. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows.

Notes

  • The Slurry Rule: Never dump dry cornstarch directly into hot milk! It will clump instantly. Always mix it with a little cold milk first.
  • Too Thick? If it gets too thick (like pudding), just stir in a splash of extra milk to thin it out.
  • Vegan Option: Use Oat Milk (Barista Blend) and dairy-free chocolate chips. Oat milk thickens better than almond milk.
